The Institute of Computer and Communication Systems (ICCS) is the oldest and one of the largest academic research institutes in Greece. It is the research branch of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and it was founded in 1989 as an independent, non-profit body. Since then, ICCS has a valuable impact on the country’s scientific output by producing outstanding research results in areas such as hardware and software technology, computer network technology, digital communications technologies, automation technologies, energy and power production technologies, biomedical and biomechanics technologies, information systems and management decision technologies, photonic technologies for communications, etc. The Institute maintains well-organized facilities based in Athens and has a reputation as a top-level research institution worldwide. Scientific research at ICCS is organized within many cross-cutting thematic research units (groups and labs) that bring together researchers, academic staff, PhD students and faculty members from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). With more than 800 highly qualified researchers and having participated in more than 4,000 national and European R&D projects, ICCS offers a world-class research environment and a dynamic hub that nurtures learning, continuous skill cultivation, international collaboration, and innovation, uniquely adapted to the ever-changing landscape of the digital age.
In ALCHEMY project, ICCS is represented by one of its most dynamic research units, I-SENSE Group. Founded in 2002, the I-SENSE Research Group is committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and today employs more than 150 researchers who carry out basic and interdisciplinary cutting-edge research across 10 thematic divisions: Connected Cooperative Automated Mobility (CCAM), Earth Observation and Environmental Monitoring (EOEM), Multimodal Logistics & Maritime Operations (ML), Industry 5.0 & Smart Manufacturing (ISM), Circular Economy & Tracing (CET), Smart Mobility Applied Systems (SMAS), Intelligent Networks & Services (INS), Crisis Management and Secure Societies (CMSS), Health Technologies (HT) and Extended Reality (XR). Aiming to generate real value for society and the economy, I-SENSE Group actively supports research exploitation activities and participates in two successful spin-offs.

The University of Antwerp is represented here by PLASMANT, a dynamic research group with about 50 members studying plasma and plasma-surface interactions. This is done via computer modelling and experiments, for various applications, but with main emphasis on green chemistry (i.e., CO2, CH4 or N2 conversion into value-added chemicals), plasma medicine, and microelectronics. In recent years, the experimental work on plasma processes has gained a lot of traction, which resulted in more environmental research with valorisation opportunities. With these experimental activities, the modelling work has expanded to include also more engineering type of modelling, for reactor design improvements and understanding experimental processes. Based on CFD modelling, PLASMANT is also constantly developing innovative plasma reactors for gas conversion, with and without catalysts. The group has various types of gliding arc plasma reactors, atmospheric pressure glow discharges, microwave plasmas, arc plasma reactors and dielectric barrier discharges available in their lab. The strength of PLASMANT is the wide range of modelling skills comprised in one group, and combined with experimental work

SRI owns Augusta Refinery, located in Augusta, near Siracuse, in Italy. Augusta refinery configuration is based on 2 production trains ranging from atmospheric crude oil distillation till conversion units for heavy oil fractions, including complex plants such as catalytic cracking, alkylation with hydrofluoric acid, catalytic reforming, hydrotreaters and sulphur conversion plants. The site is equipped also with a cogeneration units and boilers to produce electricity and steam. The import of raw material (crude oil and other feedstocks) and the handling of products takes place by sea (about 1,000 ships per year); the refinery is equipped with pipe connections for the import of natural gas and hydrogen as well as for sales (propylene, sulphur, virgin-naphtha) and for the exchange of kerosene/jet-fuel with the other companies of the industrial area. The refinery is also equipped with truck loading bays for LPG, jet-fuel and asphalt; bays for gasoline, diesel and jet-fuel are located in the coastal depots. SRI can count on its strategic position in the Mediterranean and in the emerging African market; in addition, the production includes “specialities” that are “Non-fuel products” (not intended for combustion) such as lubricating oils (lube), waxes, asphalts, propylene and intermediate products for the petrochemical market, these represent an important portion of industrial production and elements of extreme value for the site.
